I love this time of year. I love everything about December: cold weather, the possibility of snow, the short days that necessitate family time in the evenings, the glowing lights, the hope of the approaching new year.
We had snow in Washington, DC over the weekend. Snow only happens a few times a year and only lasts for a few days, but children love it. They will try to go sledding and build snowmen with the paltriest of dustings.
Christmas. Hanukkah. The Winter Solstice. They’re all coming soon. In that spirit, I think it’s time for a good old-fashioned giveaway!
Our first prize is one of our Alaska-inspired colorways.
Prize #1: Two skeins of Glacier on Springvale DK. I love this yarn. So soft, so squishy, so versatile.
Prize #2: Another Alaska-inspired colorway, Wild Strawberries. Read more about this colorway, along with some useful organizational tips here.
We’re giving away two skeins of Wild Strawberries on Wexford Merino Silk. Worsted weight goodness, that’s what this is.
Prize #3: As skein of Alchemy on Glenhaven Fingering. Yes, it’s in the vault. Yes, Glenhaven has cashmere. Yes, you’ll want to wrap the skein around your neck immediately. Yes, it’s more difficult to knit it that way.
Prize #4: Two skeins of Skye on Kells Sport. Love it. Lovelovelove.
Prize #5. New colorway. No official name yet. I’m calling it Need More Coffee Marigold for now. Dyed on the aforementioned Glenhaven Fingering that you’ll want to wrap around your neck. Looks gorgeous paired with blues, purples, greens, magentas, and browns. Trust me.

My favorite thing about December is all the time with family. I do love the cold, and the pretty, fresh-fallen snow. But December holds two very special days (not even counting Christmas, which is also special)… the anniversary of our wedding, and my youngest, miracle child’s birthday (which happens to be Christmas, too). December is mixed with joy and scary memories, but I think that makes it all the more special. No matter how busy I’ve been, when December rolls around, I stop often and remember the difficult days we went through together (my husband and I) when our baby was born - I remember the special people who were there as well and helped us through it - I remember the utter blessing of by baby’s name “coming true” to its meaning (his name means “God will save”). And I remember how truly blessed I am - to have a loving husband, and three healthy children with him.

So much to choose from - Christmas cookies, the tree, lights, good cold knitting weather, more football, waiting for Deliciousness to arrive (though that could be ‘09only) - I really love December! If I win, though, my favorite thing will be 3IG giveaways!

The best thing about December is that usually the fall heatwaves are gone and we finally get some rain - like right now.
Since Hannukkah is approaching, the bakeries stock up on sufganiot, and we can stare at them through the shop windows standing in the cold trying to calculate the best time to eat that one doughnut we allow ourselves this season for maximum enjoyment (well, I do. Some friends of mine do. Others might allow themselves more!).
So really, the best thing about December is that it’s winter, which means that the swealtering heat of the summer is gone so we can just enjoy the season and rain and warm food (latkes!) and wear sweaters and scarves and pretend it’s not the middle of the desert here and knit without sweating on the needles.

How do you choose one “best” thing about December? The cooler temperatures is a real blessing here in Florida. The holidays of course, and time spent with family and friends. And I’m a December baby so I have to say my birthday too!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:07 am
that first breath of really cold sharp air, that freezes you right through and makes you realize winter is just about here. the holidays are just about here. the snow is just about here. and all the smells and memories come flooding back, filling you up with joy, warming you against the cold and making you skip down the street like a child.

I have two favorite December activities. The first is baking. I love to bake all year long, but the holidays give me an excuse to try things I wouldn’t make any other time of the year. Second, I love to pick out gifts for everyone on my list. It’s a nice way to meditate on the things I love about each person. This year I’m knitting most of my gifts, making the whole process a months-long event. (I’m glad I’m doing this, but I may not do it again. It’s a little insane.) (=

One thing? Causing everyone to gasp in awe as I go outdoors with a tshirt and sandals.
Hello, people, lower 20C’s doesn’t count as real winter…
December 7th, 2009 at 7:16 am
December includes everything, great memories of childhood, The smelling of baking, candles, the Christmas decorations of the houses and it seems that even times are not so good around the world, people move a bit together…
December 7th, 2009 at 7:19 am
The best thing about December is seeing family. My four sons are scattered all over the U.S. The second best is that I have time to play–to bake, decorate, do jigsaw puzzles, knit.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:23 am
I love everything about December; yummy food, spending time with family and my kids working overtime to make sure their names are on the nice list. Even the snow is nice in December. I think it’s because I’m not tired of shoveling it yet.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:30 am
The best thing about December - is 2yrs ago on the 19th my little boy was born. xx
December 7th, 2009 at 7:31 am
The best thing about December is Christmas–not the tradition of lights and presents and festivities, but the meaning of Christmas itself, the biggest present of all: Jesus’ birth
Oh and from this year on December will be even more special because Dec 12th is going to be our anniversary date!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:31 am
Both my husband and I get excited once the first day of December rolls around. We start planning Christmas decorating. He’ll string lights and I will fuss with the trees (yes trees). I “finish up” (start in many cases) the Holiday Crafts and to top it off we usually have a Christmas party. Just a few friends to enjoy some eggnog and a few laughs. I think the whole process of the season excites me- and drives me crazy.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:36 am
I love everything about December - the snow, baked goods, gatherings of friends and family, but my absolutely favourite thing about December is the Seafood Feast. On Christmas Eve my in-laws host a fantastic dinner composed of every kind of seafood imaginable. It’s a tradition my father-in-law grew up with in Italy, though I’m sure they didn’t eat the way we do now - lobster, shrimp, scallops, calamari, 4 or 5 kinds of fish, and several decadent desserts. It’s like a foodie dream. Dinner takes hours to eat and there’s lots of talking, arguing, laughter and rude jokes. Kids run around and play, occasionally asking for, “more chimp”. It’s my favourite night of the year. I can’t wait!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:37 am
The best thing about December is the first snow! Just got snow in PA this weekend and it was wonderful!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:42 am
I love watching my kids get excited for the holidays — brings back memories of this time of year when I was a kid. It seemed much more magical then.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:50 am
All the food. Stuff that only comes out between November and December, and then goes back in the recipe vault, to use Yarnista terminology. Rum balls, shortbread, pumpkin pie, huge roasted turkeys, mincemeat, peppermint EVERYTHING!!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:58 am
The best part about December is the day after Winter Solstice. This is when the days start to get longer and we make the march to SPRING!
In a close second is cookies. And egg nog. Mmmmm egg nog.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:58 am
The best part of December is the Solstice. Even though it’s the longest night, it’s a great time for celebration because the Sun will start returning. Each day we’ll get a little more sunlight, incremental gifts of light that lead to the great lusciousness that is Spring.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:03 am
For me December is absolutely the Family month. Spending lots of quality time with my dear ones, having fun, playing games, eating together. Cold winter days, staying at home, with lots of candles around the fireplace giving it’s wonderfull warmth and sharing the warmth of beeing together.
Finished by the last day of the year, looking back at not only the beautiful things of the past year, but also the sad parts, wishing to all my loved ones that the best day of 2009 will be the worst day of 2010 for them.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:03 am
Christmas! Presents to give and receive. And then there is everything that goes with Christmas: baking, eating, decorating, eating, cold snowy weather and eating!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:04 am
My favorite thing, I don’t have only one but many, it’s the month I met my husband, the month we had our 4th child and of course it’s THAT time of the year, we get to celebrate the whole month, I love that
December 7th, 2009 at 8:06 am
Gosh, the best thing about this December or the best thing about December in general?
The best things about this December is that I got to go visit the studios of Martha Stewart - I’m a total fan girl so that was amazing!
The best thing about December in general? Parties? My husband’s birthday? Christmas? Hanukkah? Presents? Nope! The food! I love holiday inspired food - I love making huge buffets and serving my food, with a heaping side of love, to all my friends and family! Cookie buffets, mounds of latkes, chocolate dipped home made marshmallows, traditional German cookies for my husband, Stollen, hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps, egg nog, spiced apple cider with a hint of rum, deep fried everything in honor of Hanukkah, red bean buns, candied cranberries, beer chili, all home made…all made with love…all to fill the hearts and bellies of my loved ones.
Oh yeah, I show love with food.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:08 am
The best thing about December is all of the anticipation the new winter season brings. Fall is closing its doors and leaves you aching for that first crisp, release of chilling snow. When you feel that cold air reach your skin, it makes you want slide wool and wooden needles between your fingers. Then the real fun begins- knitting for the upcoming days ahead.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:10 am
The best thing about December is the start of dormancy which will bring the renewal of spring. It also brings time with friends and family. It also brings the reminder of many good years with my dear husband as this year we will have been married 37 years. And if the snow comes, like it has this year, it is the frosting on the ground and trees that makes it like a winter wonderland.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:10 am
I love the fact that December is full of traditions. The baking that only happens once a year. The flurry of crafting gifts. Choosing a tree, and then decorating it and remembering all of the stories that are tied to each of the ornaments. New pajamas on Christmas eve. Driving around to look at the lights. Listening to the music. All the secrets that have to be kept to surprise loved ones with something special. All of those things are just as exciting to me now as they were when I was a child.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Hmmm…the best thing might be that my parents make a visit to see the rugrats. They don’t come often and live too far for us to drive there easily, so it is nice for the rugrats to see their Nana and Pops. They just left yesterday
As for the gold colorway, you must call it Rhys! (LOL I will keep bugging you about a Rhys colorway, so you might as well get it over with huh? Hehe He is into gold things lately so, for me at least, it is fitting)
December 7th, 2009 at 8:11 am
The best thing about December for me is knowing that we are guaranteed visits with family and friends. It seems like during the rest of the year we get so busy and it’s hard to take time to plan those visits. But everything slows down in December and we get to just relax!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:12 am
The best thing about December is the quiet coziness of staying in with a fire in the wood stove, with knitting in my hands. The best thing about December is seeing my whole family (2 sons, 3 grand daughters, 1 girlfriend) all together. The very best thing about December in Alaska is …. winter solstice! We have very little daylight now.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:14 am
My favorite thing about December is also the Solstice. We put candles outside to encourage the sun to come back again.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:15 am
My favorite thing about this time of year is that ~ once you wade through the consumerism ~ people seem a little kinder, a little more generous, a little more focused on the importance of family and friends.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:16 am
The sense of anticipation. I love watching my children “waiting”. They are waiting to put the tree up, waiting for the Christmas parties, waiting for winter break, etc. The excitement that goes along with that is contagious!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:17 am
In December, something happens to the air in Colorado that seems to make the stars shine bright. So that even though it’s dark when I’m on my way to work, I can still see them through the bus windows. Knitting by starlight is a blessed thing.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Reliving the traditions, some old, some new. Cutting down the Christmas tree, the Christmas Eve church service’s last song of Silent Night, sung with everyone standing in a huge circle on the perimeter of the church with lights off and candles (singing a cappella, of course!), the community bonfire and singalong, experiencing the anticipation of Christmas morning through a 7 and 10 year old.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:20 am
My favourite thing about December is the long nights. I love it when it is dark and cozy. Also it is a great time of year for heavy metal concerts
December 7th, 2009 at 8:24 am
My favorite thing about December is definitely the end of the semester, a short winter break, time with loved ones, cozying up to the fire, and drinking tea. December is all about warmth, relaxation, and finally giving away the knitted gifts I’ve worked on all year long.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Oh, to chose what’s the best thing about December?
It’s really because it’s the month of lights. That’s what I love. Lights that brighten up the darkness that surrounds us - I leave for work in the morning in complete darkness, and arrive back home in darkness.
Lights that brighten up my home, from the star in my living room window to the advent candles, and the string of lights adorning the Christmas tree.
Lights that tell us that it’s time for change! The turning of the heavens, and new beginnings.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Christmas! For one, we almost always spend it with family (the only time we didn’t it was because we were far away and our youngest was only a month old), and I love spending time with family, especially now that I have a niece that I’d like to see grow up as much as possible. Also, it’s so much fun now that we have kids, watching them see houses that are lit up, or helping us put up and decorate the tree, and especially opening presents!
(Snow is a close 2nd right now since we’re in the DC area too, and our kids saw snow for the first time ever! Our oldest was 4 months old when we moved to Texas, and he’s 4 years old now.)
December 7th, 2009 at 8:29 am
The best thing about December is watching my childrens faces Christmas morning. The second best thing is getting to see family and friends that come in town.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:29 am
The best thing about December is that despite all the hustle and bustle I get to spend time with the people who really matter- my friends and family. And the chance that maybe, just maybe it will snow
December 7th, 2009 at 8:32 am
The best thing about December, in my opinion, is what it inspires.
It inspires magic and wonder with all that surrounds the holidays. I see my little girl’s eyes light up with the glitter and lights, and with the hope that a certain large elf will remember her.
It inspires generosity that otherwise stays dormant. We reach out to others more, for whatever reason. No one wants anyone to be alone or without at this time of the year.
Sure, it brings craziness, stress, and a lot of other things, but it’s what we make of it, and I look forward to it every year.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:35 am
The best thing about December is the extra time I get to spend with friends and family. Winding up the end of the year, listening to Christmas music, reflecting on life’s blessings, and drinking egg nog!!!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:38 am
The best thing about December is how somehow, magically, everything seems to work out. Sure, I may be up until midnight baking cookies or dashing out on Christmas eve for yet another roll of that magically vanishing wrapping paper tape and we might all get snowed in, but by the time January first rolls around we’re all able to look back and say “that was a good, fun month.” Not a bad way to end the year, you know? (Having my birthday in there too doesn’t hurt my holiday cheer a bit either.)
December 7th, 2009 at 8:39 am
The best thing about December is Christmas. I love the true meaning of it. I love the decorations, the movies, the food, and I love selecting gifts for the people I adore, and those less fortunate than I am. I don’t so much love the weather, (it’s-28C here as I type this, that’s-17F) but the snow and frost and Christmas lights are beautiful.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:39 am
My favorite thing about December is that it is the end of the year. A time to look back over the year and be thankful for all the blessings you have received. A time to look forward to the beginning of a new year and the wonderful possibilities.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:40 am
The best thing about December is that is brings friends and family together, continue childhood traditions and creating new memories.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:41 am
The best thing about December is to be reunited with family at Christmas.
To breathe the cold coming, and to see the first snowfall.
To wrap up gifts and go choose the prettiest tree, that will smell so green in the house :)!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:46 am
My favorite thing about december is winter break from school! I am a teacher and i love having time at home with my kids! My little ones give me so much to be thankful for everyday, but this time of year definitely makes me think about it more!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:47 am
The best thing about December is hearing my 5 year old whisper to me “mommy, (whoever) doesn’t do Santa Claus, either!”
December 7th, 2009 at 8:47 am
My favourite thing about December is Christmas music. I’m not an especially religious person and I’m not sure that I even qualify as Christian, but Christmas music makes me so happy. It doesn’t matter if it’s traditional, modern, instrumental, vocal, whatever–I just love it.
My fiancé, not so much. But he’s stuck with me now!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:50 am
My favorite thing about December is how excited the kids get for Christmas and snow and visiting with Grandma.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:50 am
December is for family and friends. Fun and food. Who can forget the food? It’s for thankfulness and praise and humbled remembrance.
Handmade gifts, the element of surprise, the joy of giving.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:55 am
I love everything about December. Wooly sweaters wrapped around me all the time. The hustle & bustle of the season. Jack frost snippin’ at my nose. Christmas decorations and a beautiful sparkly tree in my living room. The reason for the season, the birth of my savior.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:56 am
The BEST thing about Christmas for our family is celebrating Jesus’ birthday and spending time with friends and family. It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:04 am
The best thing about December is the cold weather. It’s the perfect time to bring out those hand-knit sweaters, socks, hats, and mittens!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:04 am
The very best thing about December for me is watching my children and grandchildren on Christmas morning. There is nothing like the eyes of a child when they first see that tree and those presents. Especially when they are just 3 and 4 years old as my two grandsons are now. Lucky for me, they live with me! along with their moms, my daughters. So not only did I get that pleasure when they were little I am getting it all over again with my grandsons. Second best is the weather. The snow and crispy air. I love how the snowfall muffles everything. It is truly the most wonderful time of the year. Merry Christmas!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:08 am
The best thing about December for me is traditions. We have so many wonderful family traditions this time of year. It just kind of slows us down again and lets us be together more. I also love the snow. Here in Boston, we just git our first snowfall, with more predicted. Snow, fire in the fireplace, hot chocolate by the tree…….it doesn’t get better than that!
Thanks!!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:12 am
My favorite thing about December is having some time off, as I’m a college instructor. A blissful few weeks of no papers to grade and sleeping in!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:13 am
December is such a special time for me and my family…I love everything about it. Christmas, family, shopping for loved ones, snow, holiday music, fun family excursions, lights, trees, reflecting on the past year and hope for the New Year to come.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Without question - travelling to Minnesota and Wisconsin to see my family!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:14 am
I love christmas! I love decorating and baking and getting the whole family together. However..the very best thing about december is that my youngest was born in it..a year ago next week the light of my life came to be.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:15 am
I love that December is so cold and dark that I don’t feel guilty about spending the whole day next to the wood stove knitting and drinking hot chocolate!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:15 am
I am not a lover of cold weather, but there are many things about December that I cherish: cozy sweaters and socks, time with family, evenings of knitting, cheerful dispositions from the public (I work in a public library), and being able to spot the birds (cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc.) more easily with the starkness of leafless branches.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:16 am
The best thing about Christmas (aside from being with family) is the Christmas tree. A real one. That smells really good. I love taking the branches you trim off the bottom to get the tree in the stand and make wreaths and decorate them.
We hang the wreaths all over the house and where ever you go the smell of evergreen follows you… I love the smell.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:19 am
My favorite thing about December is gathering around the Yule tree with my family and decorating it together. We reminisce about when and why we accumulated each special ornament, while we drink hot cocoa and listen to holiday music. It’s like magic how warm and wonderfully close we all feel as we hang the ornaments, garland, and my now 17 year old son places the star on top every year. We remember family and friends who we have lost, and give thanks for all of those who are still with us. Throughout all of December a beautiful peace and togetherness reigns over our hearts. And it’s cold enough to wear all the alpaca and wool items knitted up over the course of the past year!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:20 am
There’s no ONE best thing about December. It is a combined effect of many things. Who Jesus was (and is) and the feelings He inspires in us toward others. Family and friends. Preparations for festivities of all kinds. Lights and decorations. Shopping for people we love. Traditions and memories. Music that makes you feel warm and nostalgic and young (even if you get sick of “Mele Kalikimaka” after the hundredth time). The smells of pine, cinnamon, cookies baking. The fireplace. The gaiety and excitement of children. Falling snow and the stillness of night.
There is no one best thing about December. December is the best thing about all of us.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:20 am
snow snOW SNOW
hmmm, actually way too many things to choose from. snow, Christmas lights, cookies, eggnog in my coffee, snow, baby #3’s birthday, putting up birdfeeders for the winter, snow, the contagious excitement of kids, making chocolate for our advent calendar….snow…yarn giveaways…
December 7th, 2009 at 9:20 am
This one is hard…December is the month of my birthday, my wedding anniversary, and my son’s birthday (he’s turning one in 3 days!!). But I think my favorite thing about December is the utter stillness on a morning after a night of heavy snow. The crispness in the air, the snow still clinging to the trees, and being able to just cuddle up inside with a steaming cup of coffee and lap full of wool.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:25 am
The best thing about December is watching my kids’ level of anticipation grow with every day. They’re also usually on their best behavior, which makes for a pleasant month.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:28 am
December!!! It is the month we were married - 25 years ago on the 22nd! I LOVE celibrating it amongst the holiday spirit. I love the way that you are not thinking about Christmas during the year; and you know you should do Christmas shopping; but you just can’t. The reason being because the essence of Christmas sinks into your soul on one very special day and there it is - the joy, the giving, my family / friends / the vibrations of the world as we all search for the “all I want is world peace,” meaning of life. (I always think of Sandra Bullock and Miss Congeniality here!) Then, our hearts open up and we can revel in the all of the wonderful senses of the holiday season. Wheeee!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:28 am
We love taking the kids out for a walk/drive to see all the lights followed by hot cocoa w/ marshmallows in our snowmen mugs.
Spending Christmas day with family opening presents and eating all day long.
Sitting on the couch under a duvet watching Christmas movies. The best thing? Family time.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:29 am

Picture a dark, still evening. It’s quiet. There’s no wind. It’s cold, but not too cold. Snow is falling - big fluffy flakes - and everything is blanketed in white. And the Christmas lights are on.
I live in Ottawa. We get a lot of snow. By March you think that if you never see another flake of snow you will die happy. But in December, the snow is new and fresh and it’s not yet mind-numbingly cold outside. And so snow is good.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:35 am
Normally I’d say the best thing about December is seeing all those people you only really see at the Holidays–friends and family who are usually too busy to get together, but who make it a priority at this time of year. We all come together in candlelight, huddle around fireplaces, dressed in our sparkliest clothes, drinking eggnog and cocoa, the air full of pine and cinnamon, braced against the early evening dark. Normally, that’s the best thing.
This year, the best thing is all that, plus savoring my first pregnancy as it begins to wind toward that wonderful inevitable prize at the end, the firstborn son, eagerly awaited. I know that for the rest of my life I will look back and remember this December, remember the anticipation, remember the joyful waiting…
December 7th, 2009 at 9:36 am
The best thing about December this year will be watching my daughter enjoy her first Christmas.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:36 am
I love Christmas Eve the best. Trying to convince the kids to sleep for Santa to come, but they are so excited they can’t. Cookies. Family. Best day of the season!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:43 am
My favorite thing about December is driving around at night and seeing all of the Christmas lights. It’s such a dark time of year and the lights really brighten my spirit. More important, I love hearing my kids react to their favorite displays.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:43 am
My favourite thing about December is all the celebration and anticipation - Christmas and the New Year. Family and friends coming and going, house filled with great people, great smells, and great food.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:45 am
The best thing about December is definitely the first huge snowfall (if it didn’t already happen!). The looks on my boys’ faces is priceless, when they wake me up jumping up and down to go outside before breakfast! Love it…
December 7th, 2009 at 9:45 am
My favorite thing about December is the beauty. This includes (but not limited to): snow, lights, decorations, rosy cheeks, cookies. My other favorite thing is the cookies.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:46 am
My favorite part of December is spending extra time with family. We share food, gifts, and love while remembering the past year.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:46 am
The best thing about December is sharing it with my son. His birthday is a few days before Christmas, and this will be the first year he really has a concept of what both of those are. His birth was hard on me, and the recovery harder. Then, before his first birthday, they told us we had a 25% chance of him surviving. He did. Then just after his first birthday, we almost lost him to croup. This month he’ll turn 2. He’s completely healthy and is a totally normal little boy. And we’ll get to do all the Christmas traditions with him this year. Baking with sprinkles and frosting and cookie cutters. Snow romps and hot chocolate with mini marshmellows. Christmas carols and wrapping presents. Cake and ice cream and birthday presents. December is a very good month.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:53 am
The best part about December is of course family time! But there are other great parts too like the cold and the white lights on a beautiful Christmas tree and the joy on my children’s faces. December means bulky sweaters and boots.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:53 am
The best thing about December in general is all the time I get to spend with family. The best thing about *this* December so far is the early snowstorm we just got. Not only is it beautiful outside, but I can’t get out of my driveway to go to work, so I get to spend the morning at home with my family
December 7th, 2009 at 9:55 am
My husband and I are on break from school and work over Christmas, and we just soak up all the extra time with each other and our children. Plus, I get all kinds of extra knitting time since I don’t have to study!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:55 am
The very best thing about December is the fact that two of my children were born in this month! Over the years it has made things extra busy to have two birthdays and Christmas all in one month, but it has also made it extra special.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I love december. I love the evenings when it´s cold and my girl and me are wrapped in a hand knitted blanket watching the wind in the trees mmmm
December 7th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I LOVE December - winter is my favorite time in spite of being stuck in Georgia! I love snow, Rockefeller Center, hot chocolate, chestnuts, wearing warm things in beautiful colors, thoughts and memories of family, cats in witer fur coats, good friends like Sharon and all the ravelers, marshmallows, seeing almost to the back of our property because the trees are bare, except for the Magnolias and the beeches, warm fires and the small of wood smoke, all the old movies that only come out around Christmas…and oh so many more things.
Best wishes to all!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:00 am
ANTICIPATION……….for the tree, the cookies, the shopping, getting all dressed up for Christmas Tea, gift wrapping, seeing family from far away, the music, Christmas Eve service with the candles! Each new day brings a new blessing!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:01 am
As odd as it might sound, my very favourite thing abut December is New Year’s Eve. The promise of a new year ahead, crisp cold temperatures, fireworks. My parents host a large party every year with upwards of 50 people, and we drive the 9 hours home to be with them. It’s great to be with family at the very end of the year - and the start of a new one!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:04 am
The best thing about December is getting my Christmas tree up and decorated. This year, I went through all the ornaments and told the stories of where they came from and how long I have had them. Many of them I have had for over 20 years! So Christmas becomes a time to be nostalgic and remember all the other Christmases that have come before and a time to pass on those memories.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:05 am
the best thing about december is that it is literally a month ALL about family. my birthday is at the very end of november. my partner’s birthday is december 1. our daughter’s angel day is december 4. our son’s birthday is december 7 (today!). all happening with advent and christmas. even though it can be busy, it also provides us with chance after chance to spend time together, enjoying each other, appreciating each other, loving each other - in a way that no other month can give us.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:06 am
When will glacier be on the website for purchase?
December 7th, 2009 at 10:07 am
The best thing about December is the time spent with family, particularly those we see rarely. Love positively radiates during this month. My eldest son was also born in December (on the 25th, no less), which makes Christmas extra special for us.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:07 am
The best thing about December is that it’s finally cold enough to break out the jammies for Molly, one of our greyhounds. She looks so cute wearing her jammies around the house, it cheers me up no matter what kind of mood I’m in. Oh, and my mom makes fudge for Christmas. That helps too!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Celebrations.
Our family celebrates the birth of two of our children, my own, my twin sisters, & Jesus in the month of December.
It’s a time for both sides of the family to come together & reconnect. There is always a ton of laughter, great food, & good times.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:10 am
My favorite thing about December is outdoor snowy activities.
We get all bundled up and get our ATV’s fired up and go for long rides, and go sledding and trekking through the woods.
I’m a country girl, what can I say?
December 7th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Hi! Every skein of yarn above looks so pettable and lovely! One thing I love about December is finally wearing all the snuggly woolens I’ve been knitting. I mean, I can wear most of my hand-knit socks almost all year round, but mittens just aren’t going to work in June. Going to my coat closet and pulling out a hand-knit hat and some homemade mittens is just the best.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Baking with my son. We cheese it up by wearing matchy-matchy aprons and make a huge mess, but it is hands-down my favorite part of December. We make cookies, candies, and all kinds of treats. We usually end up with chocolate all over our clothes, in our hair, and let’s not even talk about the state of the kitchen, but just thinking about it gives me the warm fuzzies.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Decorating the tree while listening Christmas carols, chatting with my family and glancing at the window to see if there is snowflakes. And discussing the menu for the Christmas eve
December 7th, 2009 at 10:18 am
I work at a school, so my favorite thing about December is Winter Break!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:29 am
I love snow in December because it’s still new and exciting, unlike snow in February when I’m sick of it and there’s grey slush everywhere.
But my very favorite part of December is getting to spend time with my family, cooking a big Christmas meal with my mom and my aunt, picking special gifts for my nieces, and just generally being happy to be together…
December 7th, 2009 at 10:32 am
I have so many favorites. Watching the Christmas shows that come on tv, baking lots of fattening yummy things, eating the aforementioned fatty yummy treats, shopping for presents, watching my kids get excited when our fun, but oh so tacky inflatable yard decorations light up. Best of all has to be the anticipation and excitement of just waiting for Christmas to arrive. Oh and my Christmas present which is my 3IG SM renewal. I’ve been getting that for a few years now. It’s kind of a tradition for me. A Christmas present of yarn every month, what could be better?
December 7th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I’m having trouble choosing so I’m going to have to say more than one. The silly favorite is making monster cookies. It is the only time of the year I make them. Mmmm. I love music and there are so many special Christmas songs that I can hardly get my fill. Last but not least is the excitement and joy of my children.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Ohhh what yummy-licious yarn

Let me see, the best thing about December would probably be snuggling up all safe & warm inside with a mug out hot chocolate while watching giant fluffy snowflakes fall outside, knowing that I do not have to go out in it but can enjoy the scene from a safe & warm spot near the window
December 7th, 2009 at 10:39 am
Being with family, playing in the snow and baking and frosting sugar cookies with the kids!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:43 am
The best thing about December: the cold, crisp air against a bright blue sky with big puffy white clouds. A great reason to cook warming stews and drink hot chocolate!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:44 am
the best thing about december is the overwhelming feeling of family and giving.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:47 am
Best thing about December - the holiday spirit. For a short time, people seem kinder, happier, more giving. I am always hopeul that the spirit will last throughout the year. No matter what religion or nationality everyone seems somewhat united during the holiday season. I just love the spirit. Now this giveaway is a great example of the holiday spirit. I reallly love that Glacier colorway!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:47 am
My fav thing about December is probably all the holiday lights. I love celebrating Christmas with my family, but that is only for a few days out of the month. So my favorite thing about the entire month would have to be all of the beautiful lights. I live in Central Indiana where winter days can be quite dreary, and so those Christmas lights are a sign of hope and cheer!
Although yummy yarn under my tree full of lights would be even better. :o)
December 7th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Vacation Days are the best part of December!! Oh and family get-togethers. Like the one we had last weekend. Lots of food, lots of alcohol, lots of laughs. Good times. =)
December 7th, 2009 at 10:51 am
The best thing about December is getting to see my loved ones that I might not see very much through the year; we all live so far away from each other. And to be together, to bless them with love, presents and homemade food and celebrate the birth of our Saviour is the best part of the year, let alone December!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:52 am
oh, December is a wonderful month! it has the longest night (in the northern hemisphere) and then the days start to get longer. it’s a time in almost all traditions where friend & family gather, good food is cooked & shared, stories are told, children are delighted by snowfall…
it’s a cozy time, a time to take stock of the year past and to plan for the year ahead.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:52 am
My favorite thing about December is getting together with extended family to celebrate Christmas. My mother has 7 siblings and I have LOTS of cousins. (We don’t exchange gifts, thankfully!) But Christmas Eve has always been an evening of food and family and talking and seeing new babies and meeting new boyfriends/girlfriends etc. I don’t see this side of my family too often, so Christmas is the most reliable time to catch up. I look forward to it every year.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:55 am
I’m not a big winter fan, but I love the holidays! Eating good food, having the house smell like warm cookies day in and out.. yum! And also, just winding down on the year and thinking ahead to next year, getting excited about what the future will bring :o)
December 7th, 2009 at 10:56 am
The best thing about December - I can’t pick one! Friends and family together, gift giving, snuggling under a warm blanket with the lights off looking at the Christmas lights … it’s all good!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Everyone seems to make more of an effort to be nice.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:00 am
If we go with ‘what is so great about this December’ I will have to go with November is over, as it was a completely difficult month, and I am one month away from seeing my husband again and having him home, safe and sound.
If we go with the ‘great about December’ in general, than I have to second what so many others have already said, it’s the one time where no one questions you about putting family first. As a family, we really try to bring the focus of the holidays back to why we are celebrating what we are celebrating. The chance to slow down from all the activities and visit. With each other, our friends, our loved ones, and really talk about what life, love, and liberty means to each of us.
Plus, we get to eat cake, alot. (I like cake.) Especially birthday cake, when we celebrate Christ’s birthday.
THanks for being so generous.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:01 am
The very best part of December is snuggling in front of the Christmas tree with Ben and Ruger; soft Christmas music, dim lights and total peace.
This Christmas will be the first with Kaitlyn and I imagine that I will have a new favorite part of December once we have experienced the holidays through the eyes of a toddler once again.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I LOVE holiday decorations! Especially those chilly nights where I can get all snuggled up on my couch with a cup of hot tea and a knitting project. I just love how my house smells b/c of the Christmas tree and I love looking at the lights on the tree.
I also love that my son (he just turned 3) gets SO excited about anything to do with Christmas. Christmas morning this year is going to be fantastic! I cannot wait to see how excited my little boy is going to be when he sees all of the presents under the tree!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:02 am
The best thing about December? Knitting, knitting, knitting!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:07 am
My favorite part of December is how much closer everyone seems to get. How you can sit down with your significant other under a blanket with a cup of hot cocoa and watch the snow through the twinkle of the Christmas tree lights.
This is my first winter with a significant other. He plans to bring me to the city to see all the lights and walk the prettiest streets. He wants to take me sledding and build snowmen, things I haven’t done since I was a kid. We plan to bake Xmas cookies to decorate as a family, maybe even string some popcorn for our feathery friends outside. December brings out the kid in us all. That’s why December is the best, love and laughter and family.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:08 am
I love holiday movies. Polar Express for the kids, A Christmas Story for me (it’s a MAJOR AWARD) and It’s A Wonderful Life for my husband and father-in-law. I love the feeling of cozy houses and fresh baked cookies. My son (5 yo) urgently informed me that we’d need to make cookies to leave out for Santa.
The excitement of the season is hard to pass up.
Oh, and the knitting.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:09 am
I love the coziness of December. It’s all about holing up in the house, cooking big pots of food, baking, curling up on the couch, knitting and just plain relaxing. Now that our daughter is 2 1/2, she is starting to get really excited about the holidays, and it is making this month even more special as she takes so much pleasure and joy from walking in the snow, pressing cookie cutters into dough and wishing for gifts to share with her baby brother.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:17 am
I just really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments.
Much love to everyone.
It seems like each December is different, with challenges and changes as we move into the new year. I really can’t say what the best thing about December is…perhaps some warm, wise amalgamation of what everyone already said above.
Best Wishes!!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:22 am
What isn’t to love about December? The nip in the air that makes you want to snuggle, warm cider, hot cocoa with lots of marshmallows. This year we have even had some snow already! However, my favorite part of December is seeing my children very excited, happy, and trying to be extra good so that Santa will bring them gifts. They even the act of driving to the store with them becomes more fun! The yelp with glee with every passing how decked in Christmas lights, every holiday sign, and even insist on having spare change with them to drop in the Salvation Army bell ringer’s collection basket. My children are my favorite part of December.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:24 am
December is the best time for my husband and myself. Neither of our children were married when we retired to Virginia ten years ago. Since then, both have married and we have been blessed with two granddaughters. December is the month we head north to spend the holidays with family and friends.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Jack Frost visiting!! Pink cheeks an noses from him pinching us while we are outside. Coming inside to the warm fire to knit and drink hot cocoa….. oh how I love it!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:33 am
There are million things I love about December. The cookies, the hot chocolate, the tree… I could go on forever. My favorite things is that everyone seems to be just a *little* bit nicer to each other. We say “happy holidays” and maybe hold the door a little longer than usual which makes it a happier time of year.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:36 am
The best thing about December is that after the 21st, the days start getting longer. Light. And holiday lights. More light. And snow, and cold, and knitting and… Still the best thing is the Solstice and then the days start getting longer.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:38 am
The best thing about Christmas is spending time with my family and friends! The second best thing about Christmas is baking Christmas cookies!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:41 am
The best thing about December is cooking making!
(and also knitting and watching college basketball)
December 7th, 2009 at 11:52 am
December is full of awesome events for us. My husband’s birthday, Christmas and our wedding anniversary on New Year’s Eve are all things I love about this month. I love all the baking I get to do and eat, even though my hips don’t like it, lol. Thanks for being such an awesome Yarnista Sharon!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am
I love December! Here in BC, it can be a really beautiful time of year. Today there is not a cloud in the blue sky…it’s very cold but the fun kind of cold that feels crisp and leaves you with a rosy nose and cheeks. The stress of the holidays used to have me dreading December…as well as the fact the no one was around to celebrate my Boxing Day birthday but since becoming a mum…I have regained the joy and wonder in the season that I lost once I became a ‘grown up’. Almost makes me believe in Santa again!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:56 am
1. My favorite thing about December is the cold weather! I’m not a fan of being cold, but I AM a fan on wearing handknit mittens and sweaters and cowls.
2. I am ridiculously in love with the Wild Strawberries colorway and I would buy like, 19 skeins if it were an available colorway. No joke. (Okay, maybe just one or two.)
December 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am
There are so many things to choose from, but I’ll pick my current favorite….
All of my kids ending up in our bed in the morning and snuggling with us under the covers because it’s too cold to get up. This always leads to giggling, tickling, and those funny things children say.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:57 am
best thing about december is continuing old tradtions and creating new ones. and cookies of course.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
The best thing about December is the combination of quiet stillness and sparkling lights. Gathering with friends and family to celebrate. Cooking all types of goodies that may not good for you, but remind you of holidays and people past. Seeing children running around during the first snow and catching snowflakes in their mouths. Seeing the snow and clouds close in over Lake Champlain like a large blanket during a snowstorm.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
Stumbling across old favorite holiday tv shows like Santa Claus is Coming to Town, The Year Without a Santa Claus, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I love baking, cooking, the smell of the Christmas tree….and this year I’m especially enjoying watching my son’s excitement about all of it. He’ll be two in March, so he understands a lot more this year. Watching him run around in reindeer antlers last night, and seeing his excitement to help decorate, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
I love that it finally gets “cold” in December. And Christmas gifts. I make most of the gifts I give, so it is intense and fun creativity. I took the Handmade for Christmas oath 4 years ago, and have stuck with it since. And the generosity of people who give and help without asking to be repaid–that’s the best, I think!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
The best thing about December is Wollman Rink, Rockefeller Center, the beginning of snow (before it becomes an dirty and nasty), and the finality of the year with a possibility of newer, shinier, skinnier new me!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
I would say family time, but that is done and enjoyed all year. I would say celebrating Jesus, but that is accomplished and wonderful all year! The beautiful lights and yummy cookies are great, of course. My favorite thing specifically about December is: We have a tradition of keeping the week from Dec. 26 to New Years Day that we only leave the house if we HAVE to — taking sick kids to the Dr., a desperate grocery run, etc. We spend the whole week playing games, enjoying new presents, watching movies — whatever we want to do! Ok, maybe I did choose family time, but it is a little bit different than other times of the year.
Merry Christmas, Sharon!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
The best thing about December is the absolute joy my kids have all month with the anticipation of Christmas.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
The best thing about December is anticipation! Of snow, of gifts, of seeing if the gifts you chose are well received, of snow, of family, of everything. Everything good happens in December. (And a few not so good things, often also related to anticipation of family, but overall, good. *g*)
December 7th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
It’s really hard to pick the best thing about December. I have too many things I love about the month! If I have to pick just one thing to put on here, it’s probably the time of reflection and anticipation. It’s nice to think about all the things that happened over the year to make one grow and it’s also exciting to know that a new year is just around the corner.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
The best things about December? Hmmm. . . I kind of like that it is a time of closure, just before the “new beginning” of the new year. I also like that the family gets a lot of extra time together, with the holidays from work, etc. This year, our holiday travel will be finished by Christmas Day, so we will have some time to snuggle in at home. Errr, the tasty treats and presents don’t hurt either
(and knitting with Glenhaven. Maybe I can bust mine out this Dec!)
December 7th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Fires in the fireplace! Also, twinkly lights. And never being too hot to knit wool.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
What’s my favorite thing about December? If I was asked this say 8 years ago it would be hard for me to answer. No really. I used to not like winter when I was younger. I lived in Md and we NEVER got snow. Which really if its going to be cold you might as well have the snow to go along with it. But then we moved to Iowa. Right now I am staring out my windows looking at 5″ of snow in the beginning of December with another foot in the forecast for tomorrow. My kids are getting their snow clothes on. Even my youngest who, really lets face it, hates it is so excited that last night she ran out in her slippers trying to catch snowflakes in her little 2 year old mouth. Last year she stood in the snow and cried every time we went out. I have pictures even because it was so funny how much she hated it. Maybe falling face down in the snow whenever she tried to walk anywhere had something to do with it. We started a tradition last year though in spite of her hatred for all things cold and wet. Whenever it snows more then a few inches we go sledding. The aforementioned child hates that too but we do it anyway. She is still young I am hoping to change her mind. My other child is giddy though running around until his cheeks and nose are bright red although the rest of him is warm from his wool items like his hat, mittens even wool socks I knit him through the year. After we are all done we go inside and make homemade hot chocolate with candy canes. We eat yummy homemade soup and leftovers. We cuddle up next to fires and watch movies eating cinnamon sugar popcorn dh has made. This is our December. This is why I love freezing my butt off with my kids. Almost running into trees when dh is in the front of the sled. I wouldn’t change the cold weather for anything.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
My parents, siblings, & etc are all far away. My favorite part of December is traveling to see them.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I love December when I can spend the day reading and crafting with the kids around the woodstove, and then snuggle in for bed under the down comforter in a cool bedroom. Cold nose, warm toes, and baby cuddles!
December 7th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
The beat thing about December is that it marks a kind of half way mark between Fall and Spring. I’m not the biggest fan of the snow and cold and getting 2 little kids bundled up to the store. But yarn and wooly goodness does help to make it at least a pretty and soft and cozy time.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
My favourite thing about December is the snow. I grew up in a small town on an acreage and when my dad would plow the driveway there would be great big piles of snow to play on. I’d laugh to see our dainty cats mincing around the yard, shaking their paws between each step, and the dogs going crazy plowing into the snow and running around. Mostly I love the silence of snow and December. Even here in the city where I now live, the snow softens the harsh lines of buildings and quiets the loud noises of a neighbourhood.
December 7th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
The best thing about Dec is Christmas lights!!! I love lights! We dont have any up yet.. may not get to it..
But I drive past the downtown lights every night on my way to work)nite shift). I ooh and ahh like a little kid!
Happy Holidays!
Angie
December 7th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
The best thing about December is the first breath of “new snow” air when you come outside in the morning. So clean and refreshing! After that you better get moving because you can get frostbite in Iowa in less than a few minutes
December 7th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I think my favorite things about December are spending time with my family and friends and all of the pretty lights and happy songs.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
The best thing about Christmas is getting all my ornaments out and remembering the story behind each one. I LOVE Wild Strawberries, so perfect.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Ohhh… stepping out of the house in the crisp cold and smelling all the wood burning fires that people have going on in their houses… the smell of scented pine cones in the stores… the warmth of hot chocolate after a chilly outing… and the snuggle of lush wool!
December 7th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
the best thing about December is that i got married to my wonderful husband during it. on the Winter Solstice, in fact!
December 7th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Well this contest of course! Also my (hopefully annual) yarn club subscription from my FIL! Seriously though, I think the sunlight glistening through icicles ans watching the kids catch snowflakes on their tongues, making gingerbread people, drinking mulled wine….Too many things
December 7th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
The best part about December is that there are always a few consecutive days in addition to a weekend that I can spend with my children.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
The best thing about December could be that I also got married (to Tola - what a coincidence!), and it could be that my birthday is three days later, but really, for knitters, I think that it’s that they get to be snug and warm in their lovely hand-made sweaters that the “unbelievers” have been decrying as a “waster of time and energy” since September!
Maybe that should have been “smug and warm” !
December 7th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
So many but my favorite part about December is to sit curled up watching “Its a Wonderful Life”, “A Christmas Story” and “Miracle on 34th Street”while I am working on the last of the Christmas projects.
December lets you know its time to settle in for winter.
December 7th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
December - is so nice and cozy. everywere christmas decorations is lifting the spirit up. Christmas mucis remembert from childhood bring back memmories.
Meting friends and familes for advent. have glog and aebleskiver. Sitand knit as the candles burn
This is december for me
December 7th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
All of the above and especially SNOW! Lots of powdery fluffy white snow. Sledding with my children. Silently gliding on skis along mountain paths, with the pure white snow, deep green pines, and the brilliant blue New Mexico sky. Knitting by the fire, watching the snow come down all around, and snuggling with my kids and kitty.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
1). an excuse to make miniature versions of houses, trees, cars, trains…anything out of gingerbread
2). It’s the coldest month in Louisiana, the only month where I’m actually proud (and glad) I spent all summer knitting sweaters, scarves, gloves, and hats.
3). see #1
December 7th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
The best thing about December is ski season (and snow, of course), followed by peppermint hot chocolate, followed by the cookies. And all of the other holiday food
December 7th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
my favorite thing about December is the cold weather and snow! having grown up in Miami where winter was defined as temperatures in the 50s, living in NC now we actually get snow and weather in the teens and 20s. and watching the foliage turn colors and fall to the ground is just amazing. the colors are so gorgeous.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
My son’s face. That seems to be my favorite thing all year long. For December, his smile transforms his face into a wonderland all it’s own when we make his holiday gift list and when he sees the holiday sections of stores, any store, and sees and speaks of presents, and visiting our family of which we’ll have all of our immediate family with us this year, and when we walk, nee bounce, in the warm Florida air and he sees holiday decorations. My child was a miracle of health and liveliness given to me to hold 11 days before my 45th birthday in March of 2005. It’s special to celebrate The Gift of my Life at this time of year.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
The best thing about December is seeing my son get so excited about everything! Last Christmas didn’t really register for him (he was 11 months old), but this year everything is Really Exciting! Lights, tree, stockings- just the decorating has him super happy. I can’t wait to decorate cookies and have him open presents. I also love the fact that it snowed in Texas this December. We recently moved from NW Pennsylvania so the snow was an unexpected treat.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
My favorite thing about Christmas…hmmmm. Cuddling up in front of the Christmas tree with a fire going and some hot chocolate, listening to Christmas music and watching the snow fall.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I love the extra time spent with my children, baking, making gifts, wrapping gifts, getting the tree together, shoppping together, simply the togetherness of it all.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
The best thing about December is the headlong rush from Thanksgiving to the New Year. Therein are composed not only the “usual” holidays, but also my birthday and that of several other friends. Not five days goes by that I’m not wishing someone in a far-off place a lovely birthday and getting to speak with friends I don’t get to talk to often enough.
December is also a quiet month in my heart. Every night after the tree goes up, I spend a few moments in my silent house (I’m the night owl of the bunch) looking at the lights and reflecting. Sometimes it’s good (I love my family, my life is good) and sometimes it’s wistful (why didn’t I get that adorable, complimentary man’s phone number the other day? WHY?!?) but it always serves to put me at peace.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
December is my most favorite month…weather gets a nice bite to it which allows me to break out my sweaters. Just the possibility of snow makes me smile.
Along with my Christmas music, the fire and twinkling lights I can’t think of a more peaceful time spent with my family & friends.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
My favorite thing aside from the holidays is that both our dating anniversary and my dh’s birthday are in December. While it’s not in December, but 2 days into the next year, I’m also reminded of when I was still blissfully pregnant with my son, not having a clue he would come as early as he did. Now that he’s almost 6, December is about spending time with him, and making new traditions as a family. That’s my favorite part!
(And how could I not enter the contest, based both on my answer above and the fact that I live in Alaska? =))
December 7th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
December means it’s the end of the semester and I have two weeks off!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
The time I spend with my family ranks highest on my list. There are so many things to do together, so much fun to be had, and there is nothing more special than Christmas morning through the eyes of my children.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
My favorite thing about December is the crisp weather and the beautiful, low light. Everything is so beautiful this month, if you can put on enough wool and get out in the cold to enjoy it. Preferably with some snow and good friends to walk with you.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Putting up the Christmas tree while listening to John Denver and the Muppets Christmas album!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
The best thing about Dec. for me is family and knitting. I love hanging out with my girls, sitting by the woodstove and knitting something for someone close to me, all usally while watching Christmas movies
December 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
There are so many great things about December, the holidays, my family spending time together, my birthday, the cold weather, snow, the crisp feel to air. Decorating out Christmas Tree, snow! We had snow here this weekend I love the snow, staying inside with hot chocolate, knitting and having that content feeling. Christmas music, my mom used to play the Carpenters, and Neil Diamond Christmas music and now that is all I want to listen to in December. Chrstmas Eve, my family works together in a homeless shelter near our home, Christmas Day we relax at home, and play games, and eat, and play more games. My birthday is in December, so it also reminds me of birthday cake, a mint chocolate birthday cake my mom makes every year.
I think December is the best month. I think December is the best thing about December. It is a month that means time spent with my family.
December 7th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
The best thing about December is the feeling you get from the season. With the chill in the air, the lights everywhere, baking cookies, the music and then people-even with the hectic shopping and running around, there is a sense of happiness, a feeling of goodness that’s more than any other time of year. I love this season!
December 7th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
My favorite part of December is being able to cook heavier, more filling meals because the weather is colder. I love to make stews, soups, and breads to warm up the house while they cook.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
The best thing about December, this year and every year, is anticipation. Anticipation (Advent) of Christmas, and this year, anticipation of the arrival of our third daughter in late December or early January!
Though anticipation can be frustrating, there’s something about the anticipation that happens in December that fills my house with hope, excitement, and promise!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
I’ve been reading this blog for quite awhile and love your unique writing style.
My favorite thing about December is spending time with my family. Whether it’s decorating the tree, shopping, making sugar cookies, or sitting down for a big meal and to open presents, I love being able to spend time with them.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
My favorite thing about December is really two things. I love to see my kids grow more excited each year when we unpack the Christmas decorations, and open the advent boxes. My other favorite thing about December is how my house smells like a pine tree all month long. I just love that smell!!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
My favorite thing about December is the day after Christmas. The family is relaxed, the rushing is over with. Everyone is in a good mood and there are no more goals or expectations for a few days. The best conversations happen during that time.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
The best thing is the little break I get between the madness of buyback and the next madness of rush.
A little time with no students around! Oh, and Christmas!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
The best part about December is bringing out all the Christmas ornaments and the memories they hold–especially the handmade ones from our kids. This year, the best part is having our first granddaughter around to remind us what matters most: family!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
My favorite thing about December is wrapping the knitted items I’ve worked on throughout the year in beautiful paper and giving them to friends and family. It’s great to be able to (admire my work,) wrap them up and give them to the person for whom they’re intended. I love to imagine them being kept warm by something I made!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I was going to say the best thing is seeing your loved ones finally wearing all the handknits you made for Christmas. But let’s be honest, it’s the food. I love those huge home-cooked-by-Mom meals.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
The best thing about December? Everything about December is wonderful! I love the giving spirit, I love the snow and the cold weather, I love snuggling up in front of a fire with my sweetie, hot chocolate, and of course lots of knitting!
December 7th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
I absolutely love gifting! I love finding the PERFECT gift for someone. Something they never asked for or expected but is just perfect. I try hard but it doesn’t happen for every person every year, but when it does it’s just thrilling. And I love making things for my family.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
A snowy Christmas - brings up memories when i was a child and how much fun I had anticipating Santa Claus and my brother and I getting up in the middle of the night to open our stockings. And of course all the friends and family that would stop by throughout the season.
December 7th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
December means both my girls are home from college for an extended period! Because the weather here is cold we can stay inside to knit and watch movies together.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
The best thing about December is the feeling of completing a cycle. I love knowing that I’ve finished one circle of time, and a new one is about to begin.
The school year is half way through, and I’ve taken the freshmen from raw, easily intimidated, giggling children to the end of their first semester and a new level of maturity. The end of the calender year is approaching, and it’s time to take stock in our lives this past year. The final season of the year is beginning–we’ve experienced the gentle touch pf the warm spring rains, the pounding heat of summer drought, the blustery fall winds whipping leaves from the trees, and now is the season for being blanketed in a white wonderland.
In December, I want to bring out my loom, and weave color across the palette of the warp strings. In December, I enjoy spinning just the right yarn to create the perfect gift for a special person. And in December, I get to warm my hands inside the soft yarn I am knitting into the coziest of scarves.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
The best thing, for us, is that my husband actually gets a few days (in a row) off work to spend with us. We don’t see him much with his work schedule so a few days all together is so nice. Also, it’s finally cold enough to sit and knit or snuggle and enjoy the warmth of being together.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
What is the best thing about December?
I love the most people take the time to stop thinking about their needs and their routines: work, what’s for dinner, what chores need to be attended, etc. Instead, our mindsets tends to shift to those we love. We get the chance to show them that we love and value them.
Thinking of your children’s needs and wishes leads you to marvel at how they have grown and how their interests have change in the course of one year. It make you stop and treasure the season as childhood moves so swiftly.
When the hubbie hands you a little something and says you said you like this a while back. AND you know you’re loved.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
The best thing about December is to see it through a child’s eyes. This is the first Christmas my son is really noticing the tree and ornaments and he just loves it. Seeing his excitement makes my husband and I even more thrilled for the holiday and our family time together.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
The best thing about December is the light in my daughter’s eyes. She’s 3 this year and everything is just.so.magical for her. We had just a small dusting of snow up here in CT over the weekend, and I thought her heart might just burst— “it’s a little bit of Christmas, Mama!!!!” ‘Course, as soon as she said that my heart was bursting.
What’s best of all, is how it’s *not* about the presents for her. We’re doing an Advent Calendar full of special activities and projects we can do together and celebrating the lesser celebrated holidays of the season… St. Nicholas Day, Santa Lucia Day and Epiphany.
When I asked her yesterday what she wanted Santa to bring her, she said “oh, I don’t know, maybe a ball or something.” I don’t know how many years this will last for her… the focus being on the experience and not the getting… but I hope for sometime yet!
December 7th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Conan, what is best about December?
To crush the candy canes, see them sprinkled in hot cocoa, and to hear the clinking of spoons in the mugs.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
My favorite thing about December is the first time that it gets cold enough that my dog wants to get under the blanket and cuddle against my chest while I’m knitting
December 7th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
The best thing about December is celebrating my daughter’s birthday. She’ll be 5 on Friday, and I love seeing her face when we bring out the cake and as she opens thoughtful gifts from teh family. Amazing fun.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Normally I would say the best thing about December is being with family and celebrating the holidays. But this year the best thing about December is the new cat who showed up on our doorstep in the cold and rain on December 1st. We’ve decided to keep him and his name is Christmas! What a wonderful gift. He’s the sweetest cat ever!
December 7th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
The best thing about December is that it finally starts to be cold daily. I love cold, crisp air and being able to breathe again after all the leaves are gone (my allergies are crazy! :P). I love visiting my best friend and her family for Christmas - all of my christmases have been with her, and I’m looking forward to going again this year, this time with my fiance, who hasn’t yet met them.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
So many folks have so many wonderful things to say about December. I like the fact that I get a nice long holiday between Christmas and New Year’s. But my favorite is the fact that the days start getting longer again and i can come out of mourning for the sun. Pagan rituals aside, I love those yarns as well. So this December is going to make a few folks feel really special!
December 7th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
The best thing about December is all of the family time and celebrations! It is truly the most wonderful time of the year!
December 7th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
My favorite thing(s) about December:
1. Holiday music.
2. Lights on the tree
3. Remembering each special ornament and decoration as I remove it from it’s packing. Each one is it’s own special gift.
4. Smells of Mom’s cookies and remembering the fun times we all had decorating them when we were kids.
5. Reconnecting with old friends and distant family.
6. Everyone is just a little bit nicer at this time of year.
7. Anticipation of a new year and all the possibilities that bring.
8. Reviewing the past year and taking stock of all the things I have to be grateful for.
9. Decorated houses
10. My favorite holidy movies with a bowl of popcorn and some hot chocolate.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
The best thing about December is getting to spend time with my kids & grandkids. To watch those little faces light up as they discover what christmas is all about.
December 7th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
The best thing about December?
Snow. Holiday Outings. Trains. Lights. Solstice.
Need I go on?!?
December 7th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I love knowing I will see all the people I love so much in my life during the holidays! I also love knitting by the fireplace with the Christmas tree and my family near by.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
The best thing about December is cold crisp weather and cuddling around the fireplace with a cup of hot tea!
December 7th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
What is the best thing about December? I love the cold, the snow, the Christmas lights everywhere. The sounds of Christmas music, the smells of baking cookies that I only make in December. Pulling out all of our decorations, and remembering all the years I’ve used them. The way my sons still smile at the way the house looks when I’m done. Traditions, memories, Jesus.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
For the past few years the best part of December has been my children’s excitement in the season. I do love getting the Christmas tree and finding just the right gift for someone, but sharing all that with my boys and watching their newfound joy in it all is very special.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
Having time off between Christmas and New Year’s Day is the best thing about December for me. We get to spend time with family, get away from the computers, snuggle under blankets and have fun with the same Holiday traditions we’ve been following since childhood.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
My favorite think about December is all the holiday lights. I love the way they sparkle in the night and reflect off of the new fallen snow. I always enjoy just driving around and looking at everybody’s lights during the month of December. They are just so beautiful.
December 7th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
The best thing about December is all the planning, fixing, baking, cooking and anticipation leading up to the wonderful time of Christmas being spent with your familiy!!
December 7th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
The best thing about december is the time I can spend with my friends and family. Hands down!
December 7th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
When I was little the best thing about December was Christmas, and presents and waiting for Santa. Now that I am older, I realize the best thing about Christmas isn’t anything material - its love, birth, growth, and togetherness. And now I am off to put up the tree and menorah and start working on my daughter’s birthday invites lol.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
There are so many things that I love about December–the food, the traditions, the time spent with family, the first real snowfall, the long, quiet nights, the warmth of the fireplace, the sharpness of the cold air–the list is nearly endless. But what I think I love most is winter break, which gives me the time to savor all of these things.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
December: Cooler days with sun still streaming through the trees. Frosty walks by the Bay with the dogs. Handel’s Messiah, Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols.
Decorations through lighted windows. Friends Invited to decorate the Solstice tree, sipping brandy laced eggnog. Meeting friends for afternoon tea at a swank hotel after shopping among the madding crowds.
Digging out my mother’s favorite British Xmas recipes, adding my own, gathered over the years Making the Xmas puddings, Xmas cake, Mincement pies, Trifle, Cranberriy Panettone, etc., etc.
German Apple Pancake and bacon for holiday breakfasts.
The feeling of closeness and comfort.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
December in New Zealand means summer!! Family get togethers with barbeques, lazing around in the sun with a glass of bubbly (or in the case of the men, beer!), a trip to the beach, walks in the park, longer daylight hours so you can run around for ages after dinner before it gets dark and its time to come inside. And a six week break from school for the kids, so they’re allowed to stay up for ages after dinner, and don’t have to go to bed early because there’s school tomorrow. Life, love, fun, beautiful New Zealand
December 7th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
My favorite thing about December is celebrating Christmas with family and friends—also, remembering special memories about family and friends that are no longer with us. So many good memories~
December 7th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
December for me usually means, love, and family. This December for me is a little bit bittersweet. My husband is stationed overseas, and won’t be here, so This year i am learning to cherish what you have and love it even if its forever away from you.
December 7th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
The thing I love the most about December is that it’s the time of the solstice. It’s not just the end of the year, but also the beginning, when the daylight begins to last a bit longer each day. A corollary best thing about december is watching the sunrise reflected in the snow on icy, clear mornings.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
For me, December means the possibility of a snow day. We’re supposed to have our first snow storm on Wednesday. 20-30 centimeters with high winds. Just the thought of an unplanned day off. No grading because you left it at school and it is CLOSED! Curling up with a book, looking out the window not being able to see a thing, so happy you can stay inside drinking hot chocolate wearing pjs all day, knowing no one can drop in because everyone’s staying inside. The sound of the wind outside, cozy inside having a nap. I must go choose a book to read just in case!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
The best thing about December? Getting to spend time with my niece and nephew, who live too far away.
December 7th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Best thing about December: Christmas!!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
The crisp air with a little chill is the best thing about December, the kind of chill that starts thoughts of mulled wine, warm cider, and baileys irish cream in hot chocolate! Yummy and warming!
December 7th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Snow! Chiristmas trees! Chirstmas lights! Decorations! I love everything about December, in case you couldn’t guess, lol. I especially love making woolly things for the ones I love best. Especially this year, since I am knitting a scarf for a very special someone.
December 7th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
Time off! Having a day or two off to spend time with family and being able to indulge in atypical, fun activities like Christmas light festivals or gingerbread house contests or Christmas/winter plays. Lots of good quality things to spend time together doing and building memories!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Honestly… this is my sons 2nd Christmas, and hes at that age where EVERYTHING is new and sparkly and magical. So to get to see that…. from the first snow, to a brand new pair of snow boots, or a new jacket… to trying to teach him about Christmas and trying to put up trees and ornaments. My brother is 23 and adores my son, and sneaks around the house when hes over talking in hushed voices about gifts like the boy understands or is even listening. Its brought out the magic back in December… So The best thing about December is watching it through a two year olds eyes… and watching others around him be affected
December 7th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
There is a lot of things I enjoy about this time of year. Everything from the smell of gingerbread, a big Christmas dinner with the family, decorating the tree, hot chocolate, even the rush of trying to get all those knitted gifts done in time.
And being that I am originally from Puerto Rico, I enjoy that Texas winter is not nearly as harsh/cold as places up north…. ^_^v
December 7th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
In December, after about three months of not seeing too many people, since everybody else sends their kids to school, we start to see everyone again–craft fairs, school concerts, gingerbread contests, holiday parties, pageants, it goes on and on. It’s so good to see our neighbors!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
The best thing about December (and the most entertaining) is that my boyfriend’s birthday, Dec. 5th, is also the Day of the Ninja, giving him an excuse to turn his karate uniform into a ninja outfit and go wild!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
December is too wonderful it’s hard to pick just one thing. I’d have to say it’s the holiday traditions. From family Christmas parties, to making cookies, holiday crafts, building puzzles, planning presents, and decorating the tree, sledding. December should be a whole month to celebrate Christmas that way you don’t have to pack it all into too short of a time!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
December 7th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
The best thing about December is the music and the memories it evokes from my childhood.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
The best thing about December is feeling the spirit of Christmas and appreciating all that we have, and helping those that do not have as much. December is all about LOVE!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
This sounds silly, but my favorite thing about December is my dad’s birthday on the 12th (drawing day!) It’s an excuse to tell him how much I love him for his generosity, care, and humor.
December 7th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Real snow and a fire in the fireplace. Reasons to wear all of my handknit socks!
December 7th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
My favorite part about is December are our family traditions. A trip to the tree farm (same one for 22 years), a evening out at the symphony (where I always cry) and a delicious meal after; hanging our stocking that were handknit for our entire family; my brother and I still grabbing pillows and rushing to the tree after Christmas Eve dinner and fighting later over who gets to put baby Jesus in the manger; my moms Christmas village; the first snow fall. All of these little things add up the Spirit of the Season to me; it fills my heart with love and joy; sometimes I wish December never ended
December 7th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
My favorite thing about December is the first snow, particularly when it happens at night. I live in the woods, and it’s wonderful to walk around in falling snow in the middle of the night and have everything be completely silent.
December 7th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Christmas lights! Christmas carols! Christmas ornaments! Christmas cookies! Christmas everything!!
December 7th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
My favorite thing about December is decorating the christmas tree and looking at all of the ornaments that we have colllected throughout the years.
December 7th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
My favorite thing about December is the quiet relief you feel after your last final exam…
December 7th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
The best thing about December (and winter in general) is that perfect time after a snowfall when everything is super pristine and peaceful. That feeling ends, however, when I have to shovel. It’s worth it though!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
The best thing about December is sitting around a warm fire, wrapped in homemade quilts, enjoying your time with the people you love. And my birthday
BEAUTIFUL colorways!
December 7th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
This feels a little like a fifth grade essay question, but I believe the best thing about December is the renewed belief in hope. One hopes to have wonderful gatherings with loved ones. One hopes to celebrate the end of a year, the beginning of a new one. One hopes to see snow, to hear the laughter of children, the joy of passing the gift of hope on to someone else. One hopes to celebrate health, happiness, peace, and love, preferably with some bubbly and baked goods.
One hopes to be happy and be loved.
However, this year, I only hope my son sees Christmas perfectly, from both eyes at the same time, preferably as both of my kids giggle while chasing each other around the Christmas tree.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:03 am
The best thing about December is love. My husband was my first love in high school in 1977, only his father died suddenly and he worked jobs to help his mom and then went away to college. I never told him how I felt. I didn’t see him for 30 years. But I never forgot him, or stopped loving him. Three decades later, I was beginning my life over. I decided to treat myself to a trip abroad for the first time in my life. While leaving, I took a bold step and called him. We decided to finally meet, and he’d take me to the airport the next day. When the taxi dropped me off at his door, it was as if the years had never been; I saw him and my heart knew. He was, and always will be–it, for me. He took me to the airport, and asked if he could pick me back up when I returned. He did, and we began dating. I came up for three weeks in December to stay with him. We fell hopelessly in love. It was my lifelong dream come true. December is our month–we sit on the sofa, watch the fire, cuddle, and feel as if–whatever else happens–and stuff does, as my husband just lost his job–we feel as though it’s still all ok, because we have each other. At last.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:06 am
Family, food, and fun…oh and I get to take out an ocassional scarf and pretend it’s cold here in the Arizona desert
December 8th, 2009 at 12:12 am
The best thing about December is that things finally begin to slow down. I know that sounds odd, considering how busy the holidays usually are. But for me, our fall is always a very busy season with a lot of activities and running, but by December, after Thanksgiving is over, it feels like our calendar opens up, with fewer commitments and more free time to just relax. The fact that it is darker earlier and the house is warm and cosy and the Christmas lights are on, making me more than willing snuggle in and stay close to home, is an added benefit to that slowing down nature of the month!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:23 am
best thing about december? eating wonderful baked goods without guilt! they’re everywhere you go and no one can look at you with that “stop eating you fatty” look because it’s holiday time! and everyone’s enjoying cookies and breads and pies. mmmmmm pie.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:34 am
The best thing… is the fact that there is winter break at the end of it! Hee hee… and of course, the fact that it gives me plenty of motivation to knit =)
December 8th, 2009 at 12:58 am
Few things I like about December….it’s the time of year I find new recipes to share with family and friends. I bake so it’s usually cookies, cake or cupcakes. There’s always a new favorite. I also like to mix drinks for get togethers….mulled wine, wassail and peppermint hot chocolate. I love the white lights and red ornaments on the Christmas tree. Mostly, this year I’m looking forward to watching my 2 year old son open his Christmas gift….a tricycle. Everytime we walk by the toy aisle where all the bikes are…he would get all excited and say, “Beep Beep. Beep Beep.” I know this will be his favorite toy from Mommy and Daddy.

So many things are lovely about December, but most of all a sense of celebration culminating in Hannukah, Christmas and two family birthdays (one on the 26 and one the 27 and yes they get separate birthday gifts–no combining.)
December 8th, 2009 at 2:09 am
The best thing about December is the Christmas trip with my husband. Usually we travel for conferences, so one person tied up much of the day. But our December trip is always just about travel and togetherness.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:25 am
The best thing about December is the excuse to knit and crochet 24/7 cause you HAVE to finish the gifts! and then there are the happy faces on Christmas when they see that you took the time to make their gift.
December 8th, 2009 at 3:17 am
The best thing about December is the time before Christmas. Although this time is stressfull too, due to year end in the company and thinking and making Christmas presents I love the lots of lights in the citys, which dispel the darkness. And I love the Christmas fairs here in Bremen (Northern Germany), both are so beautiful on their own way.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:43 am
My favourite thing about december is actually the few days after Christmas when the winter solstice has also passed and you notice the days getting longer again.
Mince pies are pretty good too!
December 8th, 2009 at 6:57 am
The very best thing is the night sky in the pre-dawn hours. When I leave the house at 6, it’s full of constellations.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:22 am
My favorite thing about December is the feeling of expectation… I love the excitement that surrounds waiting for the first snow fall, and the anticipation of spending a lovely Christmas morning with my family, seeing their faces as they open the gifts I have made with love.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:52 am
The best thing about December is getting to spend time with my family. We’re a no-muss, no-fuss kind of crowd, and Christmas is always a great time to just be family - with gifts, of course.
Although now that I’m knitting (just started in July), I’m really loving making things to keep myself and my husband warm, so pretty soon one of my favourite things about December will be the opportunity to wear handknits!!
December 8th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I love December because it is the one month of the year here in Texas that we can be guaranteed NOT to wake up to 90+ degree weather
December 8th, 2009 at 9:59 am
The weather in AZ finally cools down, so we can snuggle a bit more and drink hot tea or cocoa. Their is mischief in the air and so many fun family times.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:05 am
December really gets the kid’s excited for Christmas. I love how they just can’t wait. This year I’ve been writing the Christmas countdown on their lunches so they are just busting with excitement. Only December can do that!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:32 am
All the colours are exquisite! Marvellous.
The best thing about Christmas? The spirit of giving and delicious secrets that pervades the house. The way that making our presents makes us more eager to give than to receive.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:41 am
December is filled with many happy memories and current joys for me. It’s about birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper (on the 23rd); remembering how my Mom always made sure that my brother and I had our own birthday cakes (his is on the 24th) in the midst of all her Christmas baking and candy making; getting to pick what I wanted for my birthday dinner (Mom’s tamale pie with extra olives);and not having to do the dishes after my birthday dinner. Some of my favorite people share this birthday month…my nephew Jess, who’s made 13 tours to the Middle East…my oldest niece Kam, who was born when I was 2…my dear friend Carol, who’s been there for me through thick and thin for over 20 years…and my aforementioned brother Jeff, who is the kindest, most patient and thoughtful person I know.
As for current joys, our first granddaughter was born last Thursday…Adelyn Grace…I will be in NYC one week from today to hold her for the first time, and that will be the best thing about my December for 2009!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Choosing one favorite thing is like choosing one favorite colorway - impossible!
To me, Christmastime means more time with family and friends, especially since my DH and my sister have a birthday near Christmas. I especially love the joy I see in my kids’ faces. I love exchanging cards, I love the festivities and kids’ Christmas programs, I love caroling and Christmas Eve service, I love the food that we only have at this time; fudge, peppermint bark, eggnog, mmmmm…..
Merry Christmas, Yarnista!! I wish you at least one “real” snow, like you remember!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:53 am
I love to see my dogs (4) Corgis playing in the snow and then how they love having me rub their bellys with a towel afterwards. Merry Christmas to Yarnista! You have the most beautiful blog I have ever seen, both the pictures and the sentiments.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:56 am
The best thing about December is getting a break from work for the holidays to spend time with family! It’s so nice to have several days of time just to be with my husband and children and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the year.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:25 am
What a wonderful giveaway - thank you so much for sharing!
My favorite thing about December? Well, I work in retail, and have for 10 years now, so the bulk of December for me means 60 hour weeks and lots of hustle and bustle. So my favorite part of December is the week between Christmas and New Years, when everything slows down and I can finally enjoy the season!
December 8th, 2009 at 11:37 am
My favorite part about December is how much nicer people are to each other during the holidays.
December 8th, 2009 at 11:57 am
I’m going to be selfish and say that my favorite thing about December is that my birthday happens. I also love the holiday season. In recent years, I’ve tried very hard to re-capture that child-like excitement for this time of the year. I bake cookies, decorate a little tree, mail cards and drink cocoa while staring at the pretty lights. Plus I celebrate my bday, so I am just LOVING this time of year!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
The best thing about December is driving at night and seeing all the houses lit up!
December 8th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
The best thing about December is that I get to celebrate the births of 4 very important people: Jesus Christ, my son, my daughter, and myself.
December 8th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
The best thing about December is that it brings a sense of closure and we have a sense of renewal in January.
December 8th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
My favorite things about December are the time spent with family and all of the lights and decorations. It’s a month filled with joy!
December 8th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
The best thing about December is the snow is still new and fresh and lovely… much nicer than the same stuff in February!
December 8th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
My favorite thing about December is drinking “hot booze”, a concoction invented by my aunt. You take whatever booze you’ve got stashed away under the sink, add orange juice and spices…it changes everytime, and is super yummy.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
The best thing about December is all the preparation and sense of anticipation for the holidays and new year to come.
December 8th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
My favorite thing about December is the cold crisp winter mornings in Memphis, TN. I watch the family of cardinals fly in and out of the bird feeder and back into the Cedar tree in my back yard. The bright crimson red of the Daddy and the golden yellow of the Mother as they sit on the other branches of a blue green cedar with the morning sun hitting them is a highlight of my morning. Don’t you think a skein of yarn would be beautiful dies with this color comb!
December 8th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
December is best for: cozy fires, warm sweaters, and family time. Thanks for the chance to win some lovely yarn!
December 8th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
The best thing about December? I can knit at my son’s hockey games and everybody around me understands why (unlike knitting at September football games).
Oh, and hot buttered rum. Sometimes I drink hot buttered rum in a thermos AND knit at hockey games (unlike drinking coffee and knitting at September…).
December 8th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
The best thing about December is seeing how my kids enjoy this month - and the fact that we have the oppurtunity just beeing together.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
my favorite part of December is the warmth. Seeing my family, making cookies and decorating them, and that mad rush of knitting to finish presents in time to give them. Oh, and let’s not forget mulled drinks (either cider or vin chaud) and the smell of cloves and cinnamon and oranges in the air. Warm and snuggly feelings in the cold or ‘cold’ as it is in Houston.
December 8th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
The absolutely most wonderful thing about December is that people are willing to get along and be good to one another. That’s the best present a person could ask for, whatever the holiday you celebrate. Perfectness personified.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Coming in from a walk, with all the wonderful smells of woodsmoke and frost and fallen leaves in the brisk air, and curling up in front of a crackling fire with a good book and a cozy blanket and a warm drink. And yarn, of course. Lots of yarn.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
The thing I love most about December is that we don’t hate winter yet!! We love the first freeze, the first snow, breaking out the sweaters and the woolens. We love building our first fires, and sprucing our houses up for the holidays. We love the crowds, the lights, the sounds of the season; we wake up January 1st and start wishing for Spring
December 8th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
The best thing about December … the secrets. I have presents stashed away for so many people who have no idea that they’re going to get a gift. I currently live in Korea where Christmas is more of a couple holiday. My students and friends talk wistfully about western movies and their Christmas scenes, wishing they could have some of what they see on the television. Unbeknownst to them, I have lots of little Christmassy bags, filled with chocolates and handknit socks and toys and just waiting for the last-minute addition of some cookies. It all makes me giggle with delight.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
The best thing about December is spending time with my kids. We have a great time decorating the tree, wrapping presents, playing in the snow and watching Christmas specials together. With all 3 kids in school all day, I treasure the extra family time December brings.
December 8th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
The best thing about December… Christmas Eve at my Grandmas. Homemade tamales, the Nativity play, and Grandma’s girdle-buster dessert
December 8th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
The best part of December? Christmas, of course! Everything about it from shopping for gifts, putting up the tree, baking cooking, Christmas mass, going to see the lights at Seneca. Everything. It’s even better if we get a dusting of snow around Christmas time, but even without it, it’s a wonderful time of year.
December 8th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
The best thing about December is that my “baby” girl comes home from college for a few (too few) weeks.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
The most wonderful thing about December is the smell of snow in the air. I open my front door dreading the cold air and instead am hit with the wonderful smell of crisp, snowy air. It may not even snow but the air smells like no other time of year and takes me back in time to wonderful memories of childhood and Christmas. It’s the best part of December!!!
December 8th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
December 26th is the best thing - the madness of Christmas is finally over.
December 8th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
The best thing about December is SNOW! Right now I’m anticipating the snowfall that is forecast for us tonight, looking outside to see if it’s started yet. I’m bundled up in fleece jammies and a blanket sipping a cup of tea, just waiting for the first flake.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
My favorite part of December revolves around family. My sister’s birthday is at the beginning of the month. And because we live away from my family, we always get to travel home at Christmas to see them.
December 8th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Not matter which winter holiday you celebrate, there is something about all the holidays and the end of the year that causes me to slow down and consider what are the important things (always people!) in my life. If you can keep that feeling with you all year, hopefully it will bring a better year!
December 8th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
It is all about anticipation. Anticipating: creative decorating, once-a-year smells, once-a-year tastes, everyone’s faces as they open their perfect gifts, the excitement of the children, wonderful leftovers, and even the last day of the month, December 31st, anticipating a wonderful year to come.
December 8th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
The best part of December is getting to see my family. We moved away from them almost 4 years ago and the trip back for Christmas is always tedious, but well worth it. I love the smell of the fresh pine tree in the house and the baking Christmas cookies! The laughter and joking. It hasn’t been the same since my mom died, but we try to laugh and make the same jokes we did when she was alive. We talk about the good times that we had at Christmas with her and it’s like she’s there with us!
December 9th, 2009 at 12:30 am
The best part of December is spending time with my family. My husband is home and my children get to spend a lot of time with him. Our house is happy and relaxed. This is our 3 years olds first Christmas where she really gets Santa so I am looking forward to Christmas morning.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:41 am
The best part about December is the smells. Crisp winter air that often has the clean smell of rain. Home baked goodies prepared with love that fill the house. Pine needles, and cinnamon sticks that adorn decorations. Fragrant candles that are burned inside my during the dark evening hours of this month containing the Winter Solstice.

December 9th, 2009 at 12:58 am
The best part about this time of year is all the time with family and friends. Parties, shopping with my sisters, lunch out with friends, decorating the house with the kids, baking with Mom, Christmas morning, singing carols, and being outside in the cold and sparkly snow.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:43 am
The best thing about December is I can finally wear all the items I’ve knitted. I’ve lived in South Texas my whole life (all 31 yrs of it) and for about 2 months out of the whole year, it gets to be about 50 degrees. Well, to those of us that are used to wearing short sleeves and flip flops for 9 months, 50 degrees freezing! So this is the time I can show off my knitting either by wearing the items or giving them to loved ones (which is my personal favorite).
December 9th, 2009 at 3:29 am
The absolute best thing about December is the way that the air gets cold and the days get short. And while you’re walking around at dusk all the houses are lit up and you know they have their heat on and are warm and cozy inside.
That and the excuse to wear hand-knit hats, scarves, and gloves.
December 9th, 2009 at 3:33 am
December is the month, my husband and I got married, now nearly eleven years ago! By that time we did not go on a honeymoon, but five years later we decided it was time to go to the island (Aruba) were my husband did spent his childhood. I had never been there and the culture was not known to me. Seeing him walking there, I saw a man as happy can be. Maybe also because of the climate, completely different of what I was used to in the ‘cold’ Netherlands. But also seeing Christmas trees in such a sunny weather gave a complete different feeling, absolutely no snow on the trees wherever. Coming home I absolutely needed a tree, but it was too late, sold out, everywhere. It was a boring time. The year after, we decided again to go back and again had a most wonderful time being together, but also mixed feelings seeing Christmas decorations in such a beautiful weather (and again no tree at home!). From that moment on things were changing. Each year the house gets fully decorated at our wedding day and we will have at least a week off, just enjoying each others company and do the things we like to do and having some special home-made dishes. I’m always looking forward to this time of the period, not just because of Christmas, but also because of the cozy time that will come!
December 9th, 2009 at 3:57 am
I love waking up in the morning with a cold nose but snug and warm under the duvet and blankets, jumping out of bed as quickly as possible to open the curtains and seeing the world covered in a layer of sparkling crisp frost, diving back into the warmth of bed and considering telling the office I’m hibernating so that I can just stay in bed and look at the clouds skidding across the sky.
December 9th, 2009 at 9:09 am
I miss the days of my childhood when December meant actual winter/snow. Living in Maryland, it is a lot less about snow…but really, December is full of wonder and sharing with my kids magical moments of no school and special treats, sprinklings of snow and making the most of it all before coming inside for hot chocolate. And appropriate weather to knit anything you want as warm as you want it to be…
December 9th, 2009 at 9:19 am
The best thing about Christmas is the birth of my Savior, Jesus. My birthday also happens this month, of which my mom and I share the same birthday, Dec. 7. I love snow and winter is my favorite season. Christmas cookies, Christmas trees and Christmas eve service are some of my favorite things about Christmas.
December 9th, 2009 at 10:37 am
The best thing about December is going into Christmas mode and working out my schedule to get everything done. I need serious deadlines to accomplish things, and 25 December works well to speed me along to completion on various works in progress.
December 9th, 2009 at 11:25 am
the best thing about December is more time with family that I don’t see much the rest of the year!! Love the big holiday gatherings. That and the cold weather that makes everyone want to stay inside and cuddle up w/ a good book or some knitting…..
December 9th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
My favorite December moments happened on snowy nights when the snowflakes were fat and they muted sounds. The snow creaked under my feet, and little else could be heard. All around the warm, colorful lights of the holidays twinkled… I’ve moved to the pacific northwest, so these snowy nights are less common than when I lived in MN, but that just makes them even more magical.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
My favorite thing about December is my son’s birthday. He’ll be one on the 15th. This month marks the completion of our family. My husband and I were always very certain that we only wanted 2 children, and so with the birth of our little Teddy, our foursome was complete (we have a 3.5 year old daughter). It just feels fitting with this joyous, family-centered time of year.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
The best thing about December…I don’t think I can choose just one! I love December because it brings my favorite season of the year. I love Christmas — the lights, music, anticipation, wrapping gifts, decorating, good food (especially sweets) and the celebration of the birth of my Savior.
And my birthday’s in December, too.
December 9th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
The best thing about December is Christmas with my daughter. The lights, the tree, the wrapping of presents, the knitting of presents.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
My favorite thing about December is the joy I get from finding the perfect thing for each person I love.
December 9th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I suppose you mean other than this giveaway - okay then, I will say Gingerbread. I think Gingerbread deserves much more of the year, but it seems in December people agree with me.
December 9th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
December: Cold Crisp mornings, football , time with family and friends!
December 9th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
The best thing about December is being with my family. The weather is cold and everyone wants to say inside and cuddle together.
December 9th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
I love December! I love the cold and the snow and the beautiful twinkling lights and the festive atmosphere. I welcome the opportunity to wear sweaters and coats and mittens. It’s lovely to have time off to relax and knit and bake and drink hot chocolate. You didn’t really think I could narrow it to just one thing did you?
December 9th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
The best part of THIS December is feeling this kid inside me kicking more and more every day. I can’t believe it’s been almost six years since I last did this.
December 9th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Best thing about December? Short days and long cold nights which inspire a guilt free hedonistic lifestyle of constant fires in the fire place, knitted goodness and hot chocolate. Living in an area where minus 30 to 40 degrees celsius (-17 to - 40 degrees farenheit) is the norm not counting windchill, there is no better excuse to bundle up and get all cozy.
December 9th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
The best thing is that even though everyone is busy, stressed, etc… they seem to be in a chipper mood. People are smiling. Come January the festive lights come down and so do the festive moods!
December 9th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
One of the best parts for me are the memories. The ‘Lifesaver Storybooks’ that I see in the stores that my grandfather always bought my sister and I. The elf figurines that were Mimi’s, my grandmother, that sit on the shelf holding N O E L or E L N O once my father or I get close to them. Helping my mother in the kitchen and stealing a piece of freshly sliced potato before it is added to the pot just like I always did as a child in her mother’s kitchen when we went to visit for the holidays. Creating new memories for all the nieces and nephews that are now part of my family, having a large family gathering because of my husbands family since mine is smaller and much more spread out then it was years ago.
December 9th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
waiting for the first snow, pulling out all my hand-knits to wear, and being reminded of how freaking cold chicago can be…not to mention, the beautiful holiday decorations all over the city and hot spiced gluwein at the christkindlmarket!!
December 10th, 2009 at 12:01 am
The excitement and wonder on the faces of children — and those of us wishing to be children again is the best part of December. The holidays have a special warmth and glow that we all hope will last. Peace on earth
December 10th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Hot cocoa, Christmas cookies — my favorite are the peanut butter kiss cookies my husband makes (peanut butter cookies with a Hershey’s kiss smooshed on top as the cookies come out of the oven) that are totally ooey-gooey when eaten warm — and of course snuggly under the covers with your honey trying to stay warm. Even in South Texas it often gets cold enough for that!
December 10th, 2009 at 9:37 am
December is same with other months,no show ,no 4 season so I don;t know how is first snow? But we also celebrate Chrismas-love,sharing and kindess ..tru December..tru all year…
December 10th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I love getting a little break and getting to spend time with my family!
December 10th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
The best thing about December is helping the kids pick/buy/wrap gifts for my DH’s Birthday on the 12th, and then watchign them get excited all over again while doing the same thing as they choose gifts for their sisters!
Thanks for the giveaway, I would LOVE to maek soemthign for our new baby (Girl #4 due on Valentine’s Day) out of any of those! THey are gorgeous!
December 10th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
The best thing about December is all the possibilities it holds. Will it snow? What fun activity are we going to do? Eating gingerbread cookies. Cuddling under a blanket with some hot chocolate. Dancing feverishly at Christmas parties. Seeing all the new sparkly stuff at Pier One. Watching my baby eat his first gingerbread cookies. Making them with my oldest. Lots!
December 10th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Simply put, the best thing about December for me is the ability to spend more time with my family. My work shuts down for 10 days, the kids are out of school.
The kids are excited to put up lights, set up the tree, and sing carols.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
The best part of December for me are those first few snowy days. Those days when snow is still exciting and not yet an annoying hastle. I love waking up to a fresh layer of snow and letting the dogs out adn watching them play and wrestle in the snow! This december I can’t wait for my 15 month old to be able to join in!
Thanks for the giveaway, I hope I win!!
December 10th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
The best thing about winter is curling up in front of the fireplace with some tea, and a large knitting project while the snow falls outside my balcony door. There’s a stronger feeling of relaxation with snow falling softly and a cat curled up on my project.
December 10th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
My favorite thing about December is getting to see on an almost daily basis how charitable my young daughters are. They always want to give something, even if it’s a dime they just picked up in the parking lot. Seeing them open presents is great, too, but just not nearly as cool as seeing them learning the joy of GIVING!
December 10th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Beyond the holidays, for me, December signifies the beginning of the junior ski racing season.
I hold many fond memories of crock pot lunches in ski lodges, the sharp bittersweet twinge of not winning but having done one’s best, and the best part, seeing “seasonal” friends after a long summer and fall apart.
December 10th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
The best thing about December is the promise of Snow…. the drifting down of the soft snowflakes that turns even a busy city into a beautiful white place of beauty. And if you’re lucky enough to live in the country you’re enveloped in the peace of the white soft mounds of snow everywhere, the white coverings on the trees, the stillness that the first snowfall brings.
December 10th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
For me, December is about embracing opposites: darkness and cold outside, but also respite from cold inside. The most wonderful things to do in December are to catch the first snowflake, wear red, hand-knit mittens, run around outside in the woods and enjoy how you can see more of the sky because the leaves have fallen, and to look at how bright the stars seem when it’s so cold at night. And then to return to a warm home and drink cocoa with someone you love!
December 10th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I love the soft, watery quality of the light at this time of year. The soft pinks and peaches of the sunsets, the bare brown trees against the winter sky. I also love the special holiday cooking… tamales, latkes, gingerbread, pork and sauerkraut, black-eyed peas…. I’ll celebrate whatever holiday tradition anyone is cooking for @;^)
December 10th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
To me the best thing about December is that everyone seems to be in a giving mood. No matter if it a great gift for family or friends or to your favorite cause.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
The anticipation for holidays! What ever you celebrate, it’s the idea that even in this cold dark month, there is something to look forward to.
December 10th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
A simple thing brings me great happiness - decorating my tree.
December 10th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
The best thing about December is that it is my oldest daughter’s birth month. She will be 8 this year. She was the best Christmas present ever!
December 10th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
The best thing about December is the Christmas music. Absolutely love all kinds of Christmas music–both religious and secular.
December 10th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
I love that it becomes consistently colder out and really starts to feel like winter. I love drinking hot chocolate by the fire at night. I love the Christmas decorations around my house and around town. Most of all, I love that everyone is in good spirts and the general air of peace and genorousity that abound this time of year.
December 10th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
until recently, we lived in alaska. we loved it, it was amazing, and i miss it with every bone in my body. december in alaska is dark. very dark. i’ve always loved winter solstice, for many reasons, but while living in alaska, it became even more important to me. it’s the shortest day of the year, the day it can’t GET any darker. the thick blanket of white snow on the ground, reflecting the lights back up to the clouds…. there was just something so serene about it. the best part, though, was the anticipation. the next day would be just a little bit longer, then a little bit longer… you knew that, while there were still months of winter to look forward to, it wouldn’t be long until we had the sun back. THAT is my favorite part of december, that turning point.
December 10th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
The best thing about December is that it makes you really appreciate sunlight. We take it for granted the rest of the year, but in December there is just not enough of it, so we grab every little bit. And got tea and hugs and cuddles, and curling up under a warm blanket with a good book.
December 10th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
The little one’s birthday.
December 10th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Now that I don’t have to work retail anymore I love Christmastime again! But so much yarn and so little time! Baking cookies, shopping for gifts that I’m not knitting, and knitting gifts (always start too late and each year I start earlier) so that I can get them out in time. And now that I’ve found Ravelry I spend a lot of time reading posts too! Now I just wish that the East Coast would get some snow! That would make it just perfect!

The best part about December is family. I am here Southern California, and my family is back in the midwest. Once a year, at Christmas, we get together and celebrate the season, and each other. To be honest, seeing my sister is what December is all about. Once a year is just not enough, but I will take what I can get!! May you all feel the joy of family this December.

More time with family. Fresh and clean cold air. And this December we have snow!

December is so exciting and filled with great holidays: Hanuakkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. December holiday school parties, office parties, neighbor parties, and the best parties-knitting friends parties.
My favorite part of the holidays is seeing the faces of my friends and family as they open up their gifts and get so excited! I just love that. We are giving only handmade gifts this year. Yarn comes in handy for that!
The second best part about the holidays is forgetting that I am sick (if just for a moment). I have a chronic pain disorder that forces certain pain signals to shoot from my brain’s pain center continously. It is a horrible disease that takes away your ability to be nice person when you’re in pain all the time. This is the best part of December!

I’m reminded each year that there really is a Santa Clause. The magic, the mystery and the innocence. I love knowing that I still believe in Santa!!! Here is one silly thing…soy nog is in the stores and it is one of my favorites. I do not like eggnog but soy nog is delicious.

The best thing about December is children. The bright excitement in their eyes through the whole month as it gets closer to Christmas. The pure innocence and faith that they have is enough to bring a bit of the spirit of Christmas to everyone.

The best thing about December is that in CA, the colder weather FINALLY starts to kick in…which means I get to knit heavier things without being too hot…it also means I get to wear more of what I knit.

The best thing about December is how wonderfully giving people get. Yes, they should be like that year-round, but some people give extra in December around the holiday season. It warms my heart.

My favorite thing about December is to go skiing. The bright sun reflects off the snow making everything look magical.

My favorite thing about December would have to be family time. The oldest is finished with the semester in college so he’s likely to spend a little more time at home, the youngest is done with school, I take some much needed vacation time and so does the hubby.
Of course, we’re all usually ready for January because by then we’re totally sick of each other, but that’s ok too.

I love December because my birthday is on the 6th and its always fantastic! I also have several friends who I knit with and we have Secret Santa with each other and its always fun trying to guess which project being made is going to be given and who it is going to! Plus its cold enough that I can finally wear one of the many scarfs I’ve made over the past several years.
And finally…fireplaces! I can indulge my need to have a fire everyday! WOOT!

The best thing about December is the PARTIES! An excuse to get all dolled up, run around like crazy buying and preparing food and decorating, enjoying delicious food and drink with good company and then collapsing and taking a nice long nap when it’s all over.

December for me means remembering the past year, and getting ready to enjoy the possibilities of the new year. It’s a time for reflection and celebration with my family and that’s what I enjoy the most.

December is all about the lead up to the festive season with its joy of giving and loving others. Can you not smell all of the delicious baking that precedes this happy event? Can you not envision all of the preparations around the house? December is one of the months where families get to enjoy being with each other. It is also a time to remember others.

The best thing about December are the hopes for the holiday season. I have a renewed Christmas spirit because of my son. I want him to be excited and love the holidays as much as I did growing up.

I love reading cookbooks in December! It is a chance to spoil my family with something new and delicious. Like homemade cocoa after a tromp through the snow. mmmm

The best thing about December for me is GUMBO!!!!

The best thing about December is a fire in the fireplace, and the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree.

I was born and raised in a very strict religion(Jehovah’s Witness). All holidays were considered evil and punishable. I never celebrated anything growing up. However, now as an adult with my own kids I DO celebrate the holidays and it’s sooo fun! I greatly enjoy all aspects of December and especially love sharing it with my kids!

Well Christmas is my first choice. I love Christmas and the whole giving and receiving of gifts, the food, the holiday spirit. But as a teacher, I really love having a long break, which begins in December….It’s different every year, depending on when the holiday falls. This year we have 10 days, but we have had in the past 2 1/2 weeks….

What I prefer about December is how towns are decorated (the lights are beautiful), to make Christmas cookies (and to eat those cookies) and to decorate my house with candles.

My favorite thing about December are the scents- the smell of the fresh winter air, the evergreen decorations, cinnamon and apple cider, and baking cookies.

Oh, I hope I am no to late!!! The best thing about December for me is the snow, the cold, the darkness and lots of beautiful lights. The feeling that everything is ok and that people are trying to be better.

The best thing about December is Christmas - how the dark nights come alive with lights, the smell of fragrant greenery brought indoors, the chance - and excuse - to visit friends and family members we don’t see nearly often enough - the bright, cheerful winter that precedes the grim and gloomy one to come.
